Can anyone make use out of discarded wood? Well that’s exactly what Korean sculptor Lee Jaehyo does.

Lee makes large sculptures and furniture out of mainly natural materials such as raw and charred wood and nails. Because he grew up in the countryside, he has always been around nature and the beauty of it is how he adopted his style and medium. He thinks that the beauty of art is a “product of the labor from where it comes from” (link). And even though nails aren’t a natural medium, he’s been using them since he graduated more than 30 years ago so he considers them just as natural.

His other source of inspiration comes when he’s in the “spiritual world”. According to him, there must be a fourth dimension around us that is stored in our consciousness. This is why most of his inspiration apparently comes from his dreams and just before the REM stage. There’s never a specific goal in mind but to discover the things hidden in his mind.

The sculpture in the picture is amazing, but it interestingly doesn’t follow Lee’s wishes. The artist is quite scared of putting his pieces in a forest or next to flowers. No matter how beautiful his pieces turn out, it would never compare to the beauty of nature. For that reason, all his exhibition walls are white, and his sculptures are able to stand out. It’s not that he’s skillful at portraying the natural world stylistically—it’s done so well because he uses natural materials.

Creating these artworks is Lee Jaehyo’s life. Even if he tries a hand at something new, it’ll only end up being art. His other hobbies include building and designing things like his studios, fences, benches, and funnily enough, his dog’s kennel. To be different and make something uncommon is probably what makes Lee such a great artist.

Lee Jaehyo has done exhibitions and shown his artwork globally including Korea, Dubai, New York, and London and has won multiple awards. He’s still continuing to make more sculptures that carry a meaningful message.
