Carol Paquet has a unique way of challenging traditional ways with her camera.

Paquet, as both a person and artist, is shaped by her Zambian origins and South African education. She was born in Northern Rhodesia but grew up in South Africa. After attending the College of Art in Johannesburg, she became an art director for advertisement for the next two decades. During this time, Paquet further pursued her art education by studying Fine Arts with William Kentridg.

Because she has lived in multiple different countries, Paquet developed a fondness for nature and the beauty in her everyday life. This allowed her to reflect on environmental issues such as climate change.

The artist aims to capture the landscapes around her with a bit of a twist: she plays with distortion, scale, orientation, angles, etc. Paquet wants to take photos of an imaginary landscape rather than the truthful reality. She pays careful attention even down to the smallest details and makes her work on a panoramic scale. Because of this, her artworks are all limited in quality and each one is unique.

Paquet’s 2021 series Bloom is famous for her incorporating abstractionism with her usual subject matter. It takes inspiration from a thriving green garden planted during the pandemic. The series served to bring positivity and hope to people through times of hardships.
